Who’s Chum?

The core of this recording project consists of members of the worship team of Covenant Church in Arlington, Massachusetts (learn more and get Chum lyrics at www.covmin.org). These original songs, most of which we sing in church, reflect our desire to worship God in a way that’s a bit scratchier, theologically meatier, and more specific to our own experience and hearing of the Word of God together. Other Chum participants are family members and friends. All but Peter Vantine are amateur musicians:

John Dee is a painting and finishes expert who has made numerous appearances on “This Old House.”

Gail Dorey (whose father sang in Benny Goodman’s band!) is an IT project manager for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Charles Morin and Peter Morin are practicing attorneys.

Adam Rich is a student at Berklee College of Music.

Aaron Silverstein is a residential elder care professional.

What’s Chum?

Our first operative definition of “chum” is “animal or vegetable matter thrown overboard to attract fish.” Jesus desires us to be “fishers of men” – by love to attract, “hook” and win our fellowmen for Him and for eternity. As fishers we are not all as artful or balletic as a fly-caster, or as canny and strong as a big net-caster. But any one of us can cast out a hook and line and, for good measure, scatter some chum on the water, perhaps made up of our own raw, ground up honesty and love. The other meaning of “chum” is “close friend.” How amazing that the Son of God should leave His glory, take on human flesh, show the radiance of the Father’s glory in His face, walk with His own creatures, teach them His Truth … and finally “no longer call them servants, but chums.” As He asks, “Chums, have you any fish?” (John 21:5) We invite you, chums, with us to worship, glorify, and even “rock the boat” for the One Who calls us all!
