This collection spans a broad spectrum of styles, from the explosive Penumbra, through the machismo strut of Big Technology, to the lyrical phrasing of Perpetual Symmetry. Every composition, though, has a hook that confirms Higgs' skill as tunesmith as well as an accomplished musician. Furthermore, the collection as a whole features outstanding contributions from each member of the band; drums take no hostages hammering out poly-rhythms, while guitars alternately weep and scream. The bass is fluid, percussive, supportive and can carry a melody.
The warp to this enticing weft is provided by the blend of wind, brass and Higgs' memorable keyboards, and though there is some great sound programming it is on the piano that Higgs seems to find his natural home. Hard to call out a favorite here since each cut is memorable in itself, but I'd say I'm With You is outstanding. As is Faith (Yourself). And of course Synthetic Spring (try not whistling that sax melody)...While you listen, check out Higgs' sites on myspace for some entertaining blogs (higgsbosonuniverse) and www.higgsboson.com for further info on the band.
Jazz Journal International, Keyboard Review, Rhythm Magazine, Guitar Techniques and The Mix are among publications giving Higgs' music great reviews, praising both the composition and execution of his first album.
Higgs put together a group of exceptional musicians for this album and is the first jazz project totally controlled by Higgs from composition through to final production, helped by Gareth Young, an internationally acclaimed pop producer and Jo Partridge guitarist on Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds. The album comprises nine original compositions that are strikingly fresh and inventive, showcasing Higgs' diverse jazz, rock and classical influences.
