In the style of Otis Redding, The Black Crowes, and Van Morrison - the Boston-based Melodeego plays their own brand of soulful rock n roll. Their debut album Runnin Outta Daylight released December 10th '04 has received a warm response from those who have come to love their live shows.
The title Runnin Outta Daylight comes from an article about football coach Bill Parcells who retired from coaching because it almost killed him due to its high demands. Now back in the sport, his approach seems urgent, focused in the moment, but fully aware of his own mortality. In the last line of the interview he says, Im running out of daylight here. After the song Runnin Outta Daylight was written, the band decided the phrase perfectly fit the vision of the whole album.
The album opens with maybe its most soulful and hopeful number Faith Over Everything. Its written in the style of the great soul singers and includes the classic gospel sound of piano and organ. In the same hopeful mood youll hear Heavens In The Air, a tender lullaby highlighted by female harmonies.
Throughout the album youll find diverse sounds and people expressing sentiments that can be traced right back to the theme. The hook-laden Old World Explosion goes from Nilsson-esque chords to a Hip-Hop groove. In it youll find someone losing touch with their youth, yearning for a new start. Five O Clock (On A Friday) exemplifies the peaks and valleys typical of much of the album. It moves from a Motown groove to power rock to mellow and melodic.
Melodeego was formed in May 03 in the wake of Innerpink (Noise Magazines Best New Band of 2000) by singer and guitarist Peter Malagodi. It features drummer Kevin Jensen, and bassist Greg Sleepytime Reinauer, both Berklee College of Music students. In recording the album the band augmented their trio by including guests on percussion, piano, organ, and vocals. All of the 11 tracks were engineered and mixed by Chris Warren, who has recorded albums for Zox, Sage Francis and ADeem.
