About This:
Radio Silent is a New York City-based power trio, playing original music while recalling the great rock ensembles of previous decades. Though dedicated to the craft of songwriting, the band places equal importance on improvisation--their live shows feature extended explorations that travel well beyond the basic parameters of any given song. This is, perhaps, explained by the group’s background: guitarist Mark Daterman has recorded and performed with jazz and improvisational artists such as Oregon bassist Glen Moore and guitarist Robert Musso (see The Blimp War, MM#0018) as well as poets Juan Felipe Herrera, Marvin Bell, and Al Young. Lead singer and drummer Terry “Maxwell” Kestel started banging on pots and pans at an early age, and the rhythmic fantasia hasn’t stopped since. He’s worked in a multitude of settings, from rock to jazz to percussion ensembles, including the Zappa-influenced Jeebus and the Renaissance folk/space jam rock of the Bardo Brothers. He has recorded and performed with the Celtic/world music ensemble Shaman, as well as the Lower East Side garage/grunge band The Big Ifs. Bassist David McGauley, formerly of Marfa Mystery Lights and Dollar Record, is a veteran face with keen ears and fleet fingers on the late night Lower East Side jam scene.
So for those listeners who just want to sit back and enjoy the songs and playing, we’re glad to have you aboard. And for those of you more closely attenuated to the improvisation factor, keep in mind that on some tracks, the solos come straight “from the floor”; that is, they’re part of the original basic track, rather than overdubbed later (see if you can tell which!) Daisy Blues, the final track on the album, is, for the most part, a “live-in-the-studio” instrumental burner.
May you enjoy listening to this music as much as we did making it.
