Oni Buchanan, Piano
Pianist Oni Buchanan has performed solo and chamber recitals across the United States. As a concert pianist and a poet, Ms. Buchanan informs each of her two primary disciplines with the other, and strives to bring the incomparable strengths of a multifaceted, interdisciplinary approach to all her work. Ms. Buchanan received her Master’s degree in piano performance from the New England Conservatory of Music, an M.F.A. in poetry from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, and a double major Bachelor’s degree in both English and music from the University of Virginia, where she graduated with highest distinction. In addition, she conducted three years of graduate-level music study at the University of Iowa School of Music while pursuing her poetry M.F.A. Her primary teachers have included Daniel Epstein, Patricia Zander, Uriel Tsachor, and Mimi Tung, and she has pursued additional studies with Russell Sherman, as well as with Joseph Kalichstein and Gabriel Chodos at the Aspen Music Festival. Ms. Buchanan is currently on the piano faculty at the New School of Music in Cambridge, MA, in addition to maintaining a private piano studio and serving as an online poetry mentor for the Anna Akhmatova Foundation. Her first book of poems, What Animal, won the University of Georgia Press Contemporary Poetry Series competition and was published in October 2003. Her poems are featured in several anthologies including The Best American Poetry 2004, and have been published in numerous journals across the country.
