About This:
“Do That!” is a CD of original jazz compositions, vocal and instrumental, released in 1999. The CD features the trio I had at the time which included Craig Whitaker on the 6 string electric bass, and drummer Sean Meehan. The songs reflect my approach to playing jazz, which is mixing up vocal “standard” type tunes, ballads, up tempo bop style numbers, Latin grooves, and of course, blues. The songs were recorded and mixed over the course of three days in April, 1999. The distinctive cover art was created by my sister-in-law Betsy Owens.
The Tracks:
1. “Do That” is based on a familiar descending minor bass line. Lyrically tongue-in-cheek, this song is one of my favorite original numbers.
2. “Double Up” is an up tempo driving blues instrumental.
3. “No Way Out” has a funky jazz groove, and lyrics about greed.
4. “Even When I’m All Alone” is a ballad in the “standard” mode, written for my wife.
5. “3AM” ain’t nothin’ but the blues, baby. Instrumental.
6. “The Mystery” is the fastest song I’ve ever sung. The lyrics are existential, but you have to listen carefully.
7. “As A Matter Of Fact” Another one written in the “standard” mode, and the form on this one is 32 bars. The melody and bass line are counterpuntal.
8. “Staring In The Face Of The Blues” This 12/8 blues hard luck story is also written in a “standard” mode.
9. “La Nina” is a Latin flavored instrumental.
10. “She Loves The Sun” has a straight 8ths feel that is almost Latin. I wrote this for my wife, also.
