About This:
When I saw Cary from the Judge's chair at the Kerrville Folk Festival "'New Folk" competition this May, I was struck by how different her work was, using many of the same ingredients as her contemporaries, but putting them together in a winning mix of groove, sass, sincerity and celebration. Her newness to the scene is evident in that she hasn't thrown away the inventiveness and whimsy that more seasoned writers often do.
- Eric Schwartz, Singer-Songwriter NY
Gypsy Train (2002) marked Cary Cooper’s entry into the folk world several years before she won Kerrville’s New Folk Award. These songs are lovely combination of sass and sincerity including “Wounded Healer” which should be a classic, “Turn Around” which makes parents cry thinking about their kids growing up, and “Romeo” – cowritten with Michael Bowers, and recorded as a duet with the amazing Tom Kimmel.
Produced by Tom Prasada-Rao, the arrangements are both lush and sparse, reverent and playful. Other songs include the live Dreamsicles staple “Flatbed Truck,” and “Miranda Magoo McPhatt” which will soon be made into a children’s book.
